In 2007, Nigerian artist Gbolahan Ayoola had a dream that would shape his artistic journey. From it emerged BlueWoman, an enigmatic figure whose vivid blue complexion and distinctive Afro have become a visual language for exploring identity, ancestry and human potential.
His work has been exhibited internationally, including at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London, ART X Lagos, the Dakar Biennale OFF and AG18 Gallery in Vienna, bringing his distinctive exploration of cultural identity to audiences across Africa and Europe.
In Power Without Reins, Ayoola explores the relationship between leadership and responsibility. The horse represents power, while BlueWoman embodies the understanding and discipline required to master it. True control, he suggests, comes not through force, but through wisdom and self-awareness.
For STYLL, Ayoola’s work speaks to our belief in art as a powerful form of storytelling, dialogue and connection. His images bring ancient knowledge into conversation with contemporary life, creating space for viewers to question, reflect and discover their own meanings.
What began as a dream has become an evolving exploration of what it means to be human, the stories we inherit and the mark we choose to leave on the world.
