STYLL’s curator, Susanna Pousette Okudzeto, has chosen these four artworks and placed them on a raw plaster wall reflecting the same principles that guide her interior design work: balance, atmosphere and thoughtful composition.
Each artwork has been selected not only for its individual beauty, but for the role it plays within the room as a whole.
I love these pieces together because of their shared calm, complimentary colours and explored themes. Zoë Lower’s The Surrender pulls the eye diagonally towards the centre of the works through its deep black background, soft greys and the highlighted figure and fabric blurring into abstraction. Hiroyuki Arakawa’s Madame Belle Epoch is stark black and white, the flower’s pale petals standing out against a deep, inky background. Sasha Nathwani’s Cloud Holbox is all muted sky tones with soft blues, greys, and a hint of warmth in the horizon line. Danny Chan’s Into The Wild uses a similar palette to Nathwani of desaturated blues, and greys and again with centrally focused warm yellow and pale pink here showing the same quiet and stillness but in an urban context.
The works visually connect and compliment each other whilst all evoking feelings of tranquillity and wonder a perfect collection.
