Moments Behind the Music, Faces in Focus

Artists Insight
Perhaps because he has walked in both worlds, Ray Burmiston’s work carries a rare intimacy. As the frontman of the 1980s pop band The Passion Puppets, he lived at the intersection of music, performance, and artistic community, an immersion that afforded him a unique vantage point, one where connection and understanding came naturally.

After transitioning from music to photography, Ray began capturing portraits of fellow artists, quickly becoming the official photographer for acts like Kylie Minogue, Boyzone, East 17, and the Spice Girls. His work graced the pages of iconic music magazines such as Echoes, D.J., Top of the Pops, and Smash Hits, cementing a reputation for capturing the unguarded moments behind celebrity.

Over three decades, Burmiston’s lens has chronicled some of the most influential figures of our time: from Sir David Attenborough and Stephen Hawking to cultural icons like Nick Cave, David Bowie, Kylie Minogue, and Kate Moss. His portraits are defined by a quiet authority and an ability to create trust, moments where personality shines through almost immediately, unfiltered and undeniably present. Each frame is a story, each image a world paused at its most revealing instant.

Beyond commercial success, Burmiston has applied his vision to charitable work. In 2020, he launched “Take A Moment,” an exhibition raising awareness for mental health, capturing celebrities with their eyes closed to convey vulnerability and calm. The series has been featured in the National Portrait Gallery and annually on Piccadilly Lights, demonstrating the emotional depth and universal resonance of his practice.

For the first time ever, a curated selection of Ray Burmiston’s archival portraits will be available in limited editions through STYLL Gallery. These works are not just images, they are moments suspended in time, capturing the rhythm of the road, the intimacy of the studio, and the spark of personality that makes each subject unforgettable. They are designed to live in space, to transform interiors, and to reward prolonged looking, perfect for collectors, designers, and anyone who understands the power of portraiture to shape both perception and atmosphere.

Your Most Important Questions

What can you tell me about the quality of your print process?
We use the highest professional gallery-grade printing, producing archival Giclée prints on Hahnemühle paper. Each paper type is carefully selected by the artists themselves for its unique texture, durability, and ability to showcase colour with exceptional depth and accuracy.
Why is the work digitally signed? Does it affect the provenance?
Digital signatures are increasingly valued in the art world because they offer long-lasting clarity and durability that traditional wet signatures can’t always guarantee. They don’t fade, smudge, or degrade over time, ensuring the artist’s mark stays exactly as intended. By removing the need for physical signing, they also reduce the carbon footprint associated with shipping artworks back and forth, making global distribution smoother, faster, and more economical.

Since the artist provides an exact digitisation of their own signature—and controls its scale, placement, and presentation—the authenticity of the work is preserved with precision. This process is further reinforced by two layers of verification from STYLL, a certificate of authenticity, and a special insert letter from the artist with the artwork pictured and described, formally transferring that particular edition to the collector. Together, these measures give collectors confidence in both provenance and quality.
Will I receive a certificate of authenticity with my artwork?
Yes, we offer two layers of verification. a certificate of authenticity, and a special insert letter from the artist with the artwork pictured and described, formally transferring that particular edition to the collector. If the artwork purchased is one of an edition, the piece’s unique edition number will be displayed. Certificates of authenticity are very important to retain should you wish to re-sell the artwork in the future. If the piece is shipped direct to you, your certificate will be packed with the artwork. If you do not receive it, please do not hesitate to get in contact via admin@styllgallery.com.
